1688 vs Taobao for Foreign Buyers: Which Is Easier and Cheaper in 2025?

I’ve ordered from both 1688 and Taobao more times than I can count. My first serious attempt at using either platform was in 2022 when I was trying to source silicone kitchen tools for a small Amazon FBA business. I lost $340 on a Taobao order that turned out to be retail-priced goods I could have bought cheaper at a local Chinese import store. 1688.com is Alibaba Group’s domestic wholesale marketplace. Sellers are manufacturers, trading companies, and wholesale distributors selling in bulk to other Chinese businesses. Most listings assume you’re buying 50–500 units at a time. The interface, payment system, and logistics are all designed for B2B transactions between Chinese entities.

Taobao is the consumer-facing equivalent — China’s eBay/Amazon hybrid for individual shoppers. Most sellers are small retailers or resellers. Prices reflect retail margins. MOQs are usually 1 unit. The user experience is designed for Chinese consumers making personal purchases.

For foreign buyers trying to source products, these differences matter enormously.

According to a 2024 report from China Internet Watch, Taobao has over 900 million active users, the vast majority being individual consumers. 1688 reports over 20 million registered business buyers. The seller base and pricing structures are completely different.

Price Comparison: What I Actually Paid

Here’s a direct comparison from real orders I placed between January 2024 and March 2025:

The pattern is consistent: 1688 runs 60–75% cheaper than Taobao for the same or equivalent product when buying at the minimum wholesale quantity.

The Real Barrier for Foreign Buyers on 1688

The price advantage on 1688 is real, but so are the barriers.

Payment: 1688 only accepts Alipay, which requires a Chinese bank account or a verified Chinese phone number linked to an Alipay account. Foreign credit cards are not accepted directly. Workarounds include using a sourcing agent who pays on your behalf, or using a Chinese friend’s account.

Language: 1688’s interface is entirely in Simplified Chinese. There’s no built-in English option. Google Translate works for basic navigation, but reading supplier reviews, factory certifications, and product specifications requires either decent Chinese or extra verification steps.

Shipping to overseas: 1688 doesn’t offer direct international shipping. You need a freight forwarder or sourcing agent to consolidate orders and ship internationally. This adds cost and a logistics step. Taobao doesn’t offer direct international shipping either, but platforms like Superbuy and Wegobuy specialize in buying from Taobao and forwarding overseas, and they’re much more established for consumer quantities.

MOQ: Most serious 1688 suppliers won’t bother with orders under 50–100 units. If you need 10 units to test a product, 1688 is the wrong platform.

Taobao for Foreign Buyers: When It Actually Makes Sense

I’ve used Taobao via a forwarding service for specific situations where 1688 doesn’t work:

When I needed 1–5 units for product testing: Before committing to 200 units of a bamboo kitchen tool set, I ordered 2 units from Taobao via Superbuy in March 2024. Total cost including forwarding: $47. That $47 saved me from ordering 200 defective units.

When I wanted branded or designed products: Taobao has a wider selection of finished designed products — things with specific aesthetics, packaging, or brand licensing that 1688 doesn’t carry. If you want a specific style that’s already retail-ready, Taobao sometimes has options that don’t exist on 1688.

When I needed speed over savings: Taobao sellers frequently ship within 24 hours. 1688 factory suppliers often need 5–15 business days for production. For a one-off urgent need, Taobao is faster.

Real Cases: What Happened When I Used Each Platform

Case 1 — Taobao mistake, January 2023, Guangzhou-sourced silicone tools: I ordered 50 units of silicone kitchen sets from a Taobao seller at ¥28/set (≈$3.90). Total: $195 + $145 forwarding = $340. When they arrived, I found identical products at a wholesale market in Guangzhou for ¥9/set. The Taobao price was full retail. I had paid for convenience with no volume discount. Same product on 1688 that month: ¥9.20/set for 100 units.

Case 2 — 1688 success, July 2024, Yiwu stainless steel bottles: Found a factory on 1688 through keyword search (不锈钢水壶 wholesale). Ordered 100 units at ¥14.50/unit ($2.01). Sent to a freight forwarder in Yiwu, shipped by sea. Total landed cost per unit in the US: $4.80. Same product category retailed on Taobao at ¥45–65/unit. Sold on Amazon for $18.99. Margin was workable.

Case 3 — Using both together, October 2024, LED lamps: Used Taobao (via Superbuy) to order 2 sample units at ¥89/unit first. Confirmed quality. Then ordered 80 units on 1688 at ¥31/unit directly from the manufacturer (found by doing a reverse image search of the Taobao product photo on 1688). This two-step process — sample on Taobao, bulk on 1688 — is now my standard workflow.

Case 4 — 1688 MOQ problem, February 2025, custom packaging: Needed 30 units of a printed kraft paper box for a gift set. Every 1688 supplier I contacted wanted minimum 500 units. Ended up using a Taobao seller who did custom printing at 50 units for ¥12/unit. More expensive than 1688 would have been, but workable for the volume I needed.

For 1688:

• Use Google Translate or a browser extension — the interface won’t change for you

• Check the supplier’s transaction history and reviews (交易数量, 评价)
• Always ask for samples before bulk ordering — most suppliers charge ¥50–200 for samples
• Use a sourcing agent for payment and shipping if you don’t have Alipay

For Taobao:

• Use Superbuy, Wegobuy, or Cssbuy as forwarding services — they have English interfaces and handle domestic Chinese shipping
• Forwarding fees typically add 30–60% on top of product cost for small orders
• Taobao is good for sampling, not sourcing
• Check seller ratings and review photos carefully — product photos can be misleading

If you’re at the testing stage — under 10 units, just validating that a product is worth pursuing — Taobao via a forwarding service is cheaper and faster than flying blind on 1688.

If you’re at the buying stage — 50+ units, confirmed product, ready to place a wholesale order — 1688 will be 60–75% cheaper per unit and directly connected to manufacturers.

The mistake I made in 2022 was treating Taobao as a sourcing platform when it’s really a retail platform. Once I understood that 1688 is the wholesale layer underneath Taobao (many Taobao sellers buy from 1688 and mark up), the pricing logic made sense. You’re not getting a deal on Taobao — you’re paying the middleman’s markup.
